For Adults: Review Course for the College Math Placement Test

Want to go to college? 2 Facts about Remedial Math courses in college:

Prior to enrolling in classes at many colleges/universities a student must take a math placement test, e.g., Compass or Accuplacer. This test determines in which course you must start your math journey in college. If you are placed in the remedial or developmental math track, this means that your college education will cost more, you earn no credit for these courses toward your major area of study, and you can delay entry to college-level math classes for one to 2 years.

Below are 2 interesting facts for adults wanting to go to college: (from the web page: "Improving College Completion-Reforming Remedial Education," Fast Facts n.d. )
  • The need for remediation is widespread. When considering all first-time undergraduates, studies have found anywhere from 28 percent to 40 percent of students enroll in at least one remedial course. When looking at only community college students, several studies have found remediation rates surpassing 50 percent.
  • Nontraditional adults comprise a significant portion of remedial students. Adults who have been out of high school for some time and are returning to college to earn a degree or receive job training often need to take remedial courses to brush up on their math, reading or writing skills. More than 42 million Americans ages 18 to 64 do not hold a postsecondary degree and would likely need remediation if they pursue one.
